This 'Red Admiral' butterfly belonging to the family of Nymphalidae is represented in vivid colors with such an impact that it seems to just take off. It is painted with minute detailing giving it an overall effect reminiscent of the work of the miniaturist.

It has a brown body with upper wings having a light brown frill running through the middle. The apical is black with irregular white spots completely absent elsewhere on the wings. The same shade of light brown also runs on the entire length of the lower wings. The main body is dull brown and the antennal clubs are blackish brown too. This lively accurate and intimately observed vignette of the insect is very impressive and appealing.

Adding to the beauty of this painting on a fading old leaf is the calligraphic text. Calligraphy developed into and art form or aesthetic pursuits. Attempts have been made to beautify the lettering both in form and coloring and to adorn the page with ornamental design. The base of the textual area is golden yellow with small red and green flowers and leaves. The text is written in bold black letters. This lends a rare charm to the picture painted against a dull, flat background.
