Among the many epithets of the great Mahakali, "Shavarudha"- she who is riding a corpse or Shava, highlights her status as the dweller of the cremation ground, and the sole power which remains in the universe after complete inhabitation of life (Pralaya). In this Basohli miniature painting, goddess Mahakali appears in a rare two-armed form, dressed in traditional attire, with fine jewelry, beautifying her lovely blue form. A golden crown with lotuses and a solar aura painted with distinctive grey-blue adorn her countenance, which appears awe-inspiringly animated. Her hands are positioned in the mudra of Abhaya (fearlessness) and Varada (giving boons). Against a deep maroon backdrop created by rivers of blood that flow after the goddess Kali's divine Lila, Devi's transcendental form inspires awe in the heart of the onlooker.
