Folk Art From The Temple Town Puri (Orissa)

Pata-Chitra are a result of folk imagination in the spiritual world of gods. Tradition traces their origin at Puri to the 11th century when the Jagannath cult was established.

The pictures of the divine 'Triad' are popularly known as 'Sri Khetra Pati', the triad being Sri Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. In a unique representation, which is dictated by popular trends, the three are depicted as one integrated with the other. On an angular pedestal, within the flames of sacred fire, the black totem-like figure of Jagannath sits cross-legged with Subhadra holding a long stemmed lotus placed in his lap.
