Shri Krishna Rasa Leela

$385

“And he,

Form of all forms,

a black cloud,

clouding our minds with his bliss.

We danced like birds,

like parrot and peacock and sparrow and finch;

darting like the fish;

stately like the elephant;

O Sur, which of us can say

what it was like with Mohan?

Enchantresses

Enchanted

by the enchanter.

The Raas Lila, Krishna’s dance with the Gopis of Brija is one of the most beautiful aspects of the divine tales of the dark-skinned lord. The Srimad Bhagavata, a popular Hindu religious text imbued with the Bhakti (devotion) and Prema (love) for Krishna describes the drama of Raas and how Krishna releases the milk maidens from the egoistic attachment to him, leading them on the path of pure love for the divine. The theme of Raas is so enchanting, that many Indian paintings, similar to the one you see here, have recreated its rhythmic beauty on canvas.

Adhering to the textual narrations of the Raas, artist Vitthal Das has used a cotton canvas and watercolors to help us experience the etherealness of Krishna’s Lila. On a full moon night (which is clear from the round moon in the star-filled sky), the grooves of Vrindavan are enlivened by the presence of the village’s maidens and one young cowherd. The lake in the foreground is replenished with blossoming lotuses, on the bank of which dances a peacock accompanied by two others. Two groups of Gopis on each side of the painting can be seen playing various instruments and singing sweet melodies, with their hands raised in the air. In the star-studded sky, four bananas (mounts) hover, carrying Indra-Indrani, Shiva-Parvati, Vishnu-Lakshmi, and Brahma-Saraswati made clear by their animal mounts attached to their thrones. The mesmerizing Raas has pulled them out of their celestial abodes, to witness which they have descended to Vrindavana.

In the shed of lush green trees, a Mandala (circle), is formed by Krishna and the Gopis, also known as the “Raas-Mandala”. The Gopis are dressed in appealing attire and are decked in fine pieces of jewelry. Krishna, the center of their affections is wearing royal attire and unique headgear. Each of the Gopi can be seen holding Krishna’s hand, a discernible fulfillment of their desire to be the dark one’s beloved. The ground on which the Rasa is being performed is marked by a cream-color carpeted with small flowers. A row of pink and blue flowers runs across the painting, framing it in a fragrant embrace, just like the painting will wrap any space it is placed, in the sweetness of Krishna and Gopis’ eternal Prema.
