Seated on a black antelope skin against a vibrant yellow ground is the goddess Kalaratri (Kala: black or time; ratri: night). The taut outlining of the seat is in contrast with her own, comparatively softer form. Her dark hue symbolizes the cosmic night, representing the darkness which precedes the dissolution of the world at the end of each kalpa (pralaya).
Sipping wine (her favorite drink) from a disproportionate bowl, she is amply endowed, yet lithe in appearance, and has attractive eyes, much like lotus petals, tinged with a slight amount of red.
