The proud divine parents- Shiva and Parvati appear in this soapstone sculpture from Orissa, blessing their dotting and auspicious child Ganesha, creating an atmosphere of heavenliness. Uma-suta Ganesha is tucked on the waist of his mother, holding a Modaka in his hand, gazing at his parents lovingly, who seem to be relishing in the simple pleasures of parenting.

Chaturbhuja or four-armed Shiva is awe-inspiringly adorned with Naagabhushan (serpent ornaments) from head to toe, a tiger hide garment, and the crescent moon in his tresses, while Uma is beautified by a lovely hairdo, jeweled ornaments, an intricately patterned dhoti, and an ornate girdle. This glorious scene is outlined by the sculptor with a grand aureole, embellished with lotus petals, purifying flames, and a striking Kirtimukha or face of glory- the demon who devoured himself to prove his devotion to Shiva. On the lotus pedestal, Nandi, Shiva’s mount sits, as a powerful emblem of Shaivism.

The imagery in this stone statue is the perfection of the universe, the pinnacle of auspiciousness, that manifests in the form of Ganesha, and originates from the union of Shiva and Shakti, the supreme father and mother.
