The Gopala-roopa of Lord Krishna is a deification of His childhood self. Born to the pious Devaki-Vasudeva, He is a most wondrous kid, having survived against all odds to grow up into the fine young Lord we know Him as. Through a fateful turn of fortunes instigated by His uncle Kamsa, Lord Gopala ends up spending His childhood in Mathura under the care and guardianship of another pious couple, Nanda-Yashoda. This compact sculpture depicts the beauty and innocence of Lord Gopala.

Like the child that He is, He is crawling on all fours. Having stumbled upon a laddoo, the most delicious of Indian sweetmeats, He is now regarding it with all the love in His child’s heart. He is dressed in a green silk shirt distinguished by fine coloured inlay, which matches the studded inlay on the multi-tiered pedestal. From the masses of curls spreading about His shoulders and the peacock feather in His hair to the Vaishnavite tilaka on His brow, this is an authentic Lord Gopala composition.
