Bharata Natyam (Tamil Nadu)
Tamil Nadu lies to the extreme south India. It is bounded on the East by the Bay of Bengal, on the West by the Western Ghats, while its Southern tip touches the waves of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean at Kanya Kumari.
Bharatanatyam originated about two thousand years ago and is the oldest among the contemporary classical dance forms of India. It incorporates a rich variety of movement that includes has gestures, facial expressions head movements and foot rhythm. Through mudras as this body language is known the dancer is able to depict concrete objects and also to express abstract concept. Here, the dancer strikes a typical Shiva pose. Notice the rich silk sari and the wide array of ornaments.
