The magnificent recluse of the vast Indo-gangetic plains, the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros is a revered animal. In the culture of the subcontinent prevails a love and reverence of large, slow terrestrial animals. They are considered to be the personification of wisdom and patience, values that are integral to the Indian psyche. The rhinoceros sculpture that you see on this page is fashioned from brass and would make for a valuable addition to the decor of any Indian home.
It is a short, stocky work of art, executed with considerable attention to detail. Its large wrinkled face is pockmarked with multiple dents into the medium. Within the same lie its eyes, the lines that define its mouth, and the raised horn as well as the protruding ears. A fabric has been laid over its body, made from a coat of richly coloured bits of resin, the finest-quality ones at the disposal of the modern-day artisan. Note the serrations on the exposed parts of its limbs, a hallmark of the sculptor’s precision and predilection for dynamic detail.
