The reason why Vishnu appeared in the form of half-man, half-lion has an interesting tale behind it. Prahlada, son of the evil and powerful king Harinyakasipu, was a pious boy devoted to Vishnu. His father tried to discourage his pious inclination and inflicted on him cruel punishments. Eventually he decided to kill the child. Hiranyakasipu himself was invulnerable; he had received a boon as a result of ritual penance to Shiva whereby he could not be defeated by man, god or beast, neither in day nor night, not inside or outside. To save Prahlada and destroy the evil king, Vishnu appeared at twilight (neither day nor night), as a lion headed man (neither man nor beast), within a pillar (neither in or out) and put the king on his lap (neither on the ground or up in the air) and put an end to him using his claws (no weapon).

On a multi layered square pedestal is the inverted lotus seat on which sits Narasimha, cross-legged. He wears a beautifully crafted crown and holds all of Vishnu's attributes. Pictures of Vishnu in his various avatars abound but sculptural representation of the god in his early incarnations are rare.

  • This is a beautiful item! Although, I was dissapointed by the description. There are only two things that are slightly incorrect about it. One, is the boon. Lord Hiranykasipu received this exact boon, but from Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. Shiva is much easier to please than Lord Brahma, and Hiranykasipu did extreme austerities for 100 celestial years. With all of that hard work, he deserved Lord Brahma. Second, is about the part of the boon, "inside nor outside." Yes, Hiranykasipu got this benidiction, and yes Lord Narasimhadeva found a loop hole, but Lord Narasimhadeva killed Hiranyakasipu in a doorway. A doorway is neither inside nor outside. A pillar is all inside, Thus it doesn't make any sense. I would like to thank you for this time and i hope you will change these errors promptly. Thank you.
