Amitabha Buddha is the fourth of the five Jina who represents the historical Buddha Sakyamuni Gautama. His heavenly realm belongs to the west direction, called the Western Paradise as he symbolizes the setting sun, as well as his life in the beyond. His paradise is that where all mortals are reborn without distinction of sex, similar to the gods. In beyond, he welcomes and consoles, out of compassion he delivers creatures from their suffering and welcomes them to his pure land. He is the Buddha of ‘intellectual power’ and ‘wisdom of marvellous discernment’.

While he was still a Bodhisattva, Amitabha mediated for five kalpas before he pronounced his great vows in 48 points. By which he undertook to save all beings, irrespective of who or where they were. His role as saviour earned him great popularity in Tibet, China, and Japan. Amitabha. His simplicity pleased the masses, the warriors, aristocrats and, probably, his consoling aspect spoke as strongly to the heart of men.

The statue of Amitabha Buddha is built in brass. He sits on the plinth of a lotus as his hands are in dhyana mudra. He is shown seated with the feet completely hidden inside his robe as a sign of belonging to esoterism. He is wearing a headdress. It is believed that one can reach the land of bliss, by merely reciting the 18th vow of Amitabha Buddha ten times.
