Chenrezig is Tibetan for Avalokiteshvara. This superbly finished sculpture of Avalokiteshvara is called Sadakshara, which refers to the six letters (in Sanskrit, 'sada' means six and 'akshara' means letter) of the chant, Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hum. The most striking aspect of this Sadakshara Avalokiteshvara is the enormous Karna Phool that is dangling from His characteristically lengthened lobes.
The intricately carved five-crested crown that sits upon His head holds a slender chignon in place. The curvature of His brow is smooth and symmetrical, while His half-shut eyes are indicative of the meditative trance He is in. A long, sharp nose followed by a full mouth constitute the rest of His angular face.
His posterior hands hold a delicately blooming lotus and a rosary, while His anterior hands are in the namaskaaram mudra, holding a conch between them. His broad shoulders taper down to a small waist, which becomes the gold on His garment and His adornments. A sash of gold descends symmetrical on either side of His torso. He is in padmasana, in a thickly gold-edged dhoti. Note the curvaceous foliage carved onto the same with such supreme skill.
