The brass and bell metal images, known as dhokra work, produced in the tribal areas of eastern and central India are hollow cast votive images reflecting the archetypal dynamism of a pre-historic tradition.

Shifting focus from traditional icons, the craftsman has sought a contemporary subject. A four post netted 'Charpoy' hosts a tall and slim woman, lying on her stomach, reading a book. The lost wax procedure is used to make this pretty piece, but that is not the outstanding fact about it. The theme implies that in the so-called backward tribal areas, education has found a special place. Not only that, the women are encouraged to read and study. The woman with her legs raised at the knees lifts her head high to read the matter. There is simplicity in the body proportions, bordering on the novice.
