Brahma Purana

The Brahma Purana (also spelt as Brahmapurana) is invariably placed at the head of the list of the major puranas. It is sometimes called the Adipurana or the Adibrahmapurana. It gets its name mainly due to the fact that Brahma narrates it, even though Vyasa is the narrator in the later part. The Brahma Purana, as available in print now, has 13,783 verses, spread over 245 chapters.


The contents, which deal with various aspects of Hindu religion may be presented briefly as follows: creation of the world and the living beings, histories of various kings, description of the earth with its seven islands, hells of various types, Daksa's sacrifice and its destruction by Siva, detailed descriptions of various places of pilgrimage like Ekamra, Avanti and Purushottama Kshetra (Puri), origin of the river Ganga, story of Ravana, story of the king Hariscandra, story of Sri Krsna in detail, various avatars or incarnations of Vishnu, performance of sraddhas or obsequial rites, spiritual wisdom contained in Samkhya and Yoga darsanas, and a eulogy of listening to the whole purana.


Its treatment of the places of pilgrimage is fairly exhaustive and its verses on this subject have been extensively quoted by the writers on the dharmasastras.

पुराण गाथा
पुराण शब्द ‘पुरा’ एवं ‘अण’ शब्दों की संधि से बना है, जिसका शाब्दिक अर्थ -‘पुराना’ अथवा ‘प्राचीन’ होता है । ‘पुरा’ शब्द का अर्थ है - अनागत एवं अतीत । ‘अण’ शब्द का अर्थ होता है - कहना या बतलाना अर्थात् जो पुरातन अथवा अतीत के तथ्यों, सिद्धांतों, शिक्षाओं, नीतियों, नियमों और घटनाओं का विवरण प्रस्तुत करे। सूर्य की किरणों की तरह पुराण को ज्ञान का स्रोत माना जाता है। जैसे सूर्य अपनी किरणों से अंधकार को हटाकर उजाला कर देता है, उसी प्रकार पुराण अपनी ज्ञानरूपी किरणों से मानव के मन का अंधकार दूर करके सत्य के प्रकाश का ज्ञान देते हैं। सनातनकाल से ही जगत् पुराणों की शिक्षाओं और नीतियों पर ही आधारित है।
The Brahma Purana - A Great Epic & Essence of Brahma Purana
The Brahma Purana (Sanskrit: ब्रह्मपुराण; Brahma-Purana) is one of the eighteen major PURANAS of Vaishnavi Hindu texts. Brahma Purana is a text related to Lord Brahma who is equipped with Rajogun, therefore, this is also known as Rajas Purana. • Balam Bhatta has refered it as Adi Purana (first Purana) in his commentary on the Mitakshara. • Also known as Saura Purana, because it includes many essential episodes related to Surya or the Sun God. • The text is divided into Purva-Bhaga (former part), Uttara-Bhaga (later part) and a concluding part, known as Brahmottara Purana.
The Importance of Puranas in Hinduism
The Puranas are widely revered Hindu spiritual texts. They comprise descriptions of the universe, from its creation to destruction. The Puranas also include the origins of various deities, kings, idols, and sages. Some of the Puranas preach cosmology, geography, and Hindu ideology. These holy texts tell us mythological stories of gods and goddesses. You can learn about the deities like Shiva, Vishnu, Parvati, Durga, etc, from the sacred text of Purana. As per legends, the Puranas are based on five matters or facts. These are the preliminary creation of the universe, secondary creation after systematic collapse, the origin of gods and patriarchs, the regimes of the Manus, considered the first humans, and the history of the various dynasties. There are a total of 18 main Puranas, also known as Mahapuranas. Each Purana tells stories ranging from mythology to geographic narrations. An Insight into the Texts, Philosophies and Gods of Hindu Dharma
The canon of Hinduism is basically defined by what people do rather than what they think. Consequently, far more uniformity of behaviour than of belief is found among Hindus, although very few practices or beliefs are shared by all. Most Hindus chant the gayatri hymn to the sun at dawn, but little agreement exists as to what other prayers should be chanted. Most Hindus worship Shiva, Vishnu, or the Goddess (Devi), but they also worship hundreds of additional minor deities peculiar to a particular village or even to a particular family. Although Hindus believe and do many apparently contradictory things—contradictory not merely from one Hindu to the next, but also within the daily religious life of a single Hindu—each individual perceives an orderly pattern that gives form and meaning to his or her own life. No doctrinal or ecclesiastical hierarchy exists in Hinduism, but the intricate hierarchy of the social system (which is inseparable from the religion) gives each person a sense of place within the whole.
Vedas: The Ancient Texts of the Eternal Order
The word ‘Veda’ is derived from the root vid (to know). Also known as Sruti (what is heard), Vedas are a vast body of sacred and esoteric knowledge concerning the eternal spiritual values that have been handed down to posterity by oral tradition. Vedas were revealed to the great ones called rishis (men of wisdom, sages) in the depths of their meditation. The Hindu religious traditions have accorded the Vedas the highest place in its canonical literature. As such, they are revered, as the basic scriptures of Hinduism. It is difficult to fix the date of the Vedas. The widely accepted period is that of the Harappa-Mohanjo Daro culture (4000 b.c) to a later phase of the Vedic culture. This places the date of Rig Veda, the earliest of the Veda, around 10,000 B.C. Vedas are groups of mantras and chants containing religious and spiritual insights. They have been mainly utilised in the performance of yagnas and yagas (sacrifices), which were the most common form of early Vedic religion.
