Preface
The author of this book has written several university level text books on various topics of Animal Husbandry and translated three voluminous foreign books on the subject given by the Govt. of India.

My original writings got good recognition among students, teachers, extension workers and farmers of India. Some of these books have been prescribed in the syllabi of few universities, appraised by eminent scientists and critics, reviewed in laudatory terms by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi and approved by the Commissioner, Agricultural Production and Rural Development as well as by the Director, Panchayat Raj, Uttar Pradesh for departmental purchases.

The merit of the work was further recognised on all India basis when the author was honoured by NATIONAL AWARD for the first time in the country in the name of the first President of Indian Republic "Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Award" by the I.C.A.R., Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The honour was conferred on 30th January, 1976 by the then Minister for Agriculture, witnessed by Education Minister of India and other eminent personalities including top Agricultural scientists of the country in a special function organised by the Govt. of India for the purpose.

Though there are number of good books on the subject by the foreign writers but they do not cater the need of Indian livestock because the data presented therein is based upon the experiments performed in foreign countries, not suited to our animals under Indian conditions. The main object of writing this book is, therefore to present the principles of nutrition and their application for feeding of our farm and laboratory animals including household pets in the simplest possible manner. Although this book is primarily meant for students in Agriculture and Veterinary Science, it is believed that the information given will be of value to the persons engaged in the field of Animal Husbandry, Dairy, and Veterinary Science, as well to the farmers, researchers and extension workers in India and abroad.

The text presented here may not be claimed to be all original but a compilation and review of the existing material in own language. An attempt has been made to include all the latest information available on the subject but it is apparent that much detailed data could not be given due to limitation of space.
