Book Description
Foreward

A teacher in the classical mould, Dr. Satyendra Nath Sen had Learned respect from all those who had the fortune to come in contact with him by his total concern not only for the development of the academic world but for society at large. To most of his students he was a 'role model' and they were to be guided even in their later life by his ideals and sense of ethics which were those of a liberal humanitarian.

An erudite scholar, Dr. Sen had made significant contributions to the study of Economics and his book, 'Central Banking in Underdeveloped Money Markets' (1952) was a pioneering work in this sphere. The book was written at a time when the fledgling nation was searching to find its path towards economic development and it certainly went a long way towards helping that process.

Satyendra Nath Sen was not only a brilliant teacher. He became the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University in 1968 and held that office till 1976. This was a period of acute social and political turmoil which naturally affected University life also. It went to Dr. Sen's credit that no matter how turbulent the sea was, he performed his duties as the helmsman with remarkable coolness, ensuring that the boat did not capsize. Earlier he was associated with the Universities of Princeton and Stanford as Visiting Professor and at home was with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, the Indian Statistical Institute and also the Indian Museum and the Victoria Memorial.
