About the Book

Transit of Planets is used in astrology for précising the occurance of an event in consonance with Vimshottari Dasa system and other methods of timing of events. The transit of planets are used for pin pointing an event. The present work is an effort to delineate the transit secrets in a textbook fashion. A complete Guide for understanding Transit for beginners as well as advanced students of astrology.

Preface

Transists most easily can be understood as passage of continuously moving stellar masses over the interpretive factors of the natal chart. Possibilities inherent in the natal horoscope are stimulated again and again by the passage of transiting planets over the natal planets. Knowledge of upcoming trends can be gained by transits for purposeful direction in life. Transits finally precise the time of occurance of an event promised by the natal chart and initiated by progressions of the West or dasas and bhuktis of the Hindus.

In the vast field of astrology innumerable combinations can be set for interpretation but it is impossible to commit these to memory. Therefore stress should be laid on comprehending clearly the basic concepts for gaining competence in astrology. Material in this book has been derived keeping in mind basic principles of astrology i.e. significance of planets, signs, houses and aspects. This volume has two parts, first part deals with essential for transit interpretations and discussion of transits in Hindu astrology, while in the second part the emphasis in on transits as studied in the western world. In western world a lot has been written on transits and that seems to guide the reader in a better way in fast changing social, economic, cultural and professional conditions. Examples discussed in the book have been taken from real life and show how the transits in fact affect life events. Amateur as well as professional astrologers will find valuable material in this work very near to the facts. Author feels that the knowledgeable readers will appreciate the endeavor like all other publications of M/s Ranjan Publication.

Introduction

Planets in the zodiac move through their respective paths with their respective velocities covering different signs. The sign in which they are found at the birth of an individual is called their birth sign. After birth the motion of planets over different signs and planets in known as 'Transit' or 'Gochara'.

Every individual is curious to know his future. The permanent results of planets are decided by the birth-chart. The timing of event is arrived at by various methods like Vimshottari Dasa, Tajik system and Gochara etc. Western astrologers have also propounded various methods and are trying to devise new methods to fix exact time of occurance of an event. Western methods are Primary Directions, Secondary Directions, Radix system, Dwadasamsa system of Carter, the Progressed Horoscope of Alan Leo etc. We have deduced from our experience that by the use of Vimshottari Dasa, Day for a year system of west and combined use of transits of western system and Hindu system provides a firm basis in timing of events.

Transits indicate unveiling of an individual's relationship to his or her environment. Transits stimulate the indications represented by dasas representing individual's latent psychological tendencies and thus transits have important value in making decisions and handling difficult times. The birth horoscope gives the position of planets at the birth of an individual. With the passage of time different dasas of planets show their influence on the native through his psychological attitudes towards the world around. Among Hindus astrology is practiced in terms of events while modern western savants practise astrology in psychological terms or more clearly we can say what the native experiences emotionally, psychologically and circumstantially. Two distinct types of people come across generally in astrological practice. One type is those who experience transits or dasas of Hindu system or progressions of the western system basically as major emotional and psychological changes with or without clear pattern of events. The other type are natives who experience both transits - dasas of Hindu system or progressions of the western system with clear pattern of events. These are the people who more or less depend on the fate being less aware of the dynamics of life.

The aim and purpose of astrology is to guide or to realize and make an individual understand his place in this world by providing him information so that he can make intelligent decisions. Transits help by providing information to an individual about times appropriate or in conducive for certain kind of actions. Transits alone cannot be taken as a tool to signify an event, unless the event is signified by the natal chart and the dasas or progressions operating at that time. Astrology helps the native by disclosing his real intentions and forcing him to work responsibly. Astrology helps the native to realize his limitations so that he may not misdirect his energies to become victim of circumstances. Responsibility makes the native to control the situations around consciously, thus avoiding major disaster during bad times.

The birth horoscope of an individual tells about the kind of intentions with which he or she is born. The various dasas and progressions indicate surfacing of inherent psychological tendencies for the fructification of intentions mentioned above and transits precise the time of events. Transits also indicate psychological changes inside the individual manifesting as social interaction outside. It is like totality of symptoms of homoeopathy where we learn that firstly it is the inner self or consciousness that becomes ill manifesting itself outwardly as physical disease. The idea here is to explain how one is operating unconsciously and not in control of the circumstances. Bad events happen because one is unwilling to deal effectively with the inner dilemma or repress the inner energies rather being adapted to. These repressed energies surface either as physical illness or some kind of painful event.

Thus a transit always is indicative of a psychological event on the mental plane which may or may not manifest physically. In this book we have discussed at length the psychological events a transit can ensue and which may come to the surface or not is promised by the configurations in the natal chart and the dasas or progressions working at that time. We have learnt now that events are caused by the psychological energies signified by the planets, not by the planets themselves.

Let us now understand what is specific in Hindu astrology about transits -

In Hindu astrology or Vedic astrology Ashtaka Varga tells the results of a planet in relation to other planets. The position of different planets in the Moon's Ashtaka Varga is one such aspect depicting the benefic places for the transiting planets where this planet contributes a dot from the position of the Moon. So in Vedic astrology transit is a part of Ashtaka Varga. There is a practice of giving the Moon sign chart along with the Lagna chart in Vedic astrology. So the Moon sign chart is an additional advantage in predictions along with the Lagna chart and is given equal importance

The learned in astrology should predict from the Moon lagna in the same way as they predict from the birth lagna. "Jyotirnibandha" a classic also confirms this view

In marriage, travel, in auspicious ceremonies and in transits the Moon sign of birth is important not the name sign, and this is also supported by "Phala Deepika".

The Moon is the significator of mind and is concerned with the emotional part of the mind. As we throw a stone in the still water the molecules of water are disturbed and the disturbance appears in the form of ripples likewise different conjunctions or aspects to the natal or transit Moon disturb the emotional balance for the better or worse. The Moon is also the significator of water or liquids. The water in the sea is disturbed by the phases of the Moon in the form of tides in the sea. The Moon in different charts with different permutations and combinations of planets in the form of aspects generates different specific emotional patterns for different individuals. This emotional pattern is the key to our day-to-day activities. When his emotional pattern (natal Moon) is influenced by transiting planets then our day-to-day activities are also guided accordingly. This is the basis of transit in Vedic astrology.
