Persian paintings are a superb example of the intermingling of several cultures in the production of an art form. These artworks draw their inspirations from ancient Greek art, Chinese paintings introduced in Persia under the Mongols, and the regional textual and mythical traditions of Persia.
Persians used best quality papers produced in regions such as Daulatabad, Samarqand, and China which were colored with paints obtained from natural sources such as stones and chemical treatment of certain elements (for example copper fillings were mixed with vinegar to get green color), and metallic coating of gold and silver to embellish the artwork.
Calligraphy forms a vital part of Persian miniatures, which was done by shaping reed pieces with special knives and brushes for painting the miniatures were obtained from the hair of certain animals, such as the white cat bred solely for the hair from its tail used in the brushes.
Persian art reflects the fusion of a variety of styles such as Greek, Chinese, Indian and Iranian. Persian paintings represent the miniature style of paintings, in which small pieces of paper serve as the canvas for the artists, who tell stories from the cultural and historical past of Persian using intricate details and unique elements like calligraphy.
