A Moment Frozen in Time

Behold a poignant representation of one of the most iconic scenes from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. This handcrafted piece captures the noble warrior and grandsire, Bhishma Pitamaha, awaiting his chosen moment of death upon the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It is a testament to his valor, his unwavering adherence to Dharma (righteous duty), and his ultimate sacrifice.

The Legend of Bhishma

Bhishma, originally named Devavrata, was the son of King Shantanu and the river goddess Ganga. To ensure his father's happiness, he took a vow of lifelong celibacy and service, sacrificing his own claim to the throne. This selfless act earned him the name "Bhishma," meaning "he of the terrible oath." His devotion and wisdom made him a respected figure in the Kuru dynasty, but his loyalty ultimately bound him to fight on the side of the Kauravas in the great war. Despite knowing that the Kauravas were on the wrong side of Dharma, Bhishma remained true to his pledge. He fought with unmatched skill and ferocity, becoming a formidable obstacle for the Pandavas. However, he also possessed a boon – the ability to choose the moment of his death.

On the Bed of Arrows

After being struck down by Arjuna with the help of Shikhandi, Bhishma fell, but not to the ground. Instead, his body was suspended by the arrows that pierced him, forming a bed of arrows. Yet, because the Uttarayanam was yet to arrive, Bhishma chose to remain alive, imparting wisdom and counsel to the victorious Pandavas even in his dying moments. This representation captures the pathos of this scene. The meticulous detailing shows Bhishma lying on his makeshift bed, the golden-tipped arrows symbolically supporting him. The subtle application of color represents the wounds he sustained. This unique piece is more than just a decorative item; it's a reminder of sacrifice, duty, and the complex nature of Dharma. At approximately 7.0 x 15.0 x 7.0 inches, it makes a striking addition to any collection, serving as a conversation starter and a poignant reminder of the enduring power of the Mahabharata's timeless lessons.
