As stated in the Vamana Purana, Mahisha, king of the giants, at one time,
overcame the gods in war and reduced them to such a state of want that they
wandered through the earth as beggars. The gods sought the help of Brahma,
Vishnu and Shiva and the other gods and they emitted such flames from their
eyes and countenances that a mountain of effulgence was formed, from which
became manifest, Goddess Durga. Shiva gave her his trident, Vishnu a discus,
Varuna a conch shell, Agni a dart, Vayu a bow, Surya a quiver full of
arrows, Indra a thunder belt, Kubera a mace, and Brahma a rosary which she
holds in her numerous arms.
