Love and Romance is the most tender of all human emotions. Tales feed on this aspect and rise to gain popularity. This painting is significant for the transformation it has brought about in the traditional style of presenting Indian lore.

The tender love story of Heer and Ranjha has been told and retold over the ages. However, it retains its appeal to this day. With a band carelessly tied around his head, he holds his lady love in his strong, muscular arms. By his gesture, he tries to convey that all will be well; but to no avail. The distraught Heer refuses to be consoled. Limp and lifeless, she clings on to Heer. Through the soft hues of a few colours, Ranjha's grief is forcibly expressed. Heer's silent love and torment is reflected in her upturned face. The viewer is compelled to feel their anguish and empathize.

The overcast, turbulent sky; trees swaying in the gale form the background; the restless river in the foreground is the nature's mirror image of the grieving emotions of the two desperate hearts and souls crying to be united.
