Vishnu, along with Brahma, took the marriage proposal to Shiva. They had convinced Himavan that Shiva was the best ever groom for his daughter Parvati. In this work of Kalamkari, we see Vishnu and Brahma participating in the wedding celebrations of the couple. Amidst the chanting of hymns of union, Shiva and Parvati hold hands before the holy fire and take vows that make them husband and wife. An animal and his trident are an integral part of Shiva's image, and he also carries the hourglass drum here in one hand. The flexions of his limbs lend grace to his image that matches the natural feminine grave of Parvati on the other side. Vishnu looks resplendent as a king as he makes the offering from a pot.
In the foreground sits Brahma, next to the sacred fire, and perhaps acts as the officiating priest.
