Pochampalli saris are the ikats woven in Andhra Pradesh. Ikat saris are a tradition, where the yarn to be woven is dyed before being set on the loom. There are three distinct ikat weaving techniques in India--- the Gujarati Patola, the Andhra Pochampaalis and the Orissa Sambalpuris. Andhra Pochampallis are today mostly woven in silks, though there is some cotton woven even now.

The cotton that is woven in Pochampalli, a small hamlet in Andhra Pradesh, is basically what is known as mercerized cotton that is a mixture of cotton and silk. This gives a silky and glossy texture to the fabric, while making it as light as silk. This Pochampalli sari comes in a maroon color with white thread weave all over forming large flowery enclosures within which are woven small cross shaped patterns. The entire weave is inspired by the Rangoli patterns followed in the southern states. These rangoli traditions have inspired quite a few sari traditions in India for the very auspiciousness and traditionalism of rangoli in the Hindu way of life.

The border of the sari is a simple black. The pallav is also very simple with white vertical weave on a black background.
