The close link between nature, history and the crafts of Jammu and Kashmir is reflected in the characteristics and development of embroidery, particularly in the Kashmiri valley. The embroidery draws inspiration from the gentle colours of the landscape, the flowers and the birds.

This green shawl reflects the colour of the numerous gardens of the valley. The craftsman has worked on this with a single ply satin thread. Sharply contrasting with the base are the embroidered colours of saffron and red with touches of turquoise and a liberal sprinkling of white. The pattern is oft repetitive one with a few changes to suit the contemporary market. That the embroiderer is forced by the popularity of the design to repeat, is another factor. A thin and fragile stem trespasses all the space of the field, establishing its authority with raceme, clusters of chinar leaves and a paisley motif. The ser(tip) of the paisley lifts up instead of drooping down like in most motifs of the same. The base of the buti is enclosed by twin petals on either side. Only in this particular part, turquoise is very discreetly used, which does not stand out, yet lends brilliance.

The border is a twin row embroidery of leaves set in straight pattern - enough of meandering and curving of stems on the field. This green shawl is a sure temptation for anyone to visit the garden of Eden.
