Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi stand on Kurmasana. The word Asana is used to denote the pedestal or seat on which an icon is seated or standing. A kurmasanai is oval in shape and has the face and feet of a tortoise. It also has an important association with Vishnu as Kurma was his incarnation, when he appeared to help the god and demons to churn the ocean and to obtain from it the portion of immortality, Amrita.
Not only is the metal and technique tribal but the perception and depiction of the divine couple is simple and attractive. Vishnu is seen here in karanda mukuta with numerous ornaments, wearing a multi-fold dhoti with the frill in the middle reaching his ankles. He holds his usual attributes: the discuss, the mace the conch and the lotus. His consort Lakshmi is seen with a semi-circular tiara, necklaces reaching down to her waist. Her long tresses fall in front covering her breast. She holds a lotus in one hand and makes a gesture of 'fear not', with the other. Her lower body assumes the shape of a fish's body which looks extremely graceful.
