This painting narrates a sordid tale of the slave market whereby one girl is on display while the other two await their turn. The girl barely wears anything to cover her body. The old man, the seller here, holds the delicate hand of his ware to show her to the prospective buyer. Another assistant of his, narrates the qualities of the slave girl in order to lure him. Further down the street, three men stand engaged in serious discussion, not concerned with the slave trade going on next to them.
The artist's ability to give actuality to figures through the technique of shading makes them into powerfully convincing portraits. The style has refined, controlled technique. In just a few hues of even fewer colours, the artist not only narrates a dark tale but gives evidence of his dexterity with brush and line.
