The Fifth Dalai Lama explores the function of Medicine Buddha in his writings. He prostrates before the deity, who has boundless abilities to deliver humanity from various maladies and life-threatening conditions. Medicine Buddha, as the name implies, refers to Buddha's ability to patronize healing sciences. This exquisite brass statue represents the Medicine Buddha, also known as the Myrobalan Buddha, sitting in the Ashirwad Mudra, one hand in the blessing stance and the other carrying the Bhaisajya-Patra (elixir bowl). Here in this Copper Statue Gilded with Gold, there is a Myrobilan stem emerging from the hand of Lord Buddha that touches the ground. The statue glows like the sun with the perfect gilding of gold.

Lord Buddha's curls are very cleverly painted in dark blue to make them beautifully contrast with the Swarnaroop or golden form of Lord Buddha. He sits on a lotus pedestal with half-closed eyes that show the ecstasy gained by meditation. He wears beautifully crafted robes. This statue is a true manifestation of the heartwarming image of Medicine Buddha that can cure the pain of the heart of devotees that comes from their daily sufferings.
