A vyala or yali, is a lion made fantastic with the addition of horns, and an elaborate, foliate tail. Having a cat-like graceful and lithe body, such figures were a common motif between the seventh and tenth centuries in Indian temple architecture. Nearly always depicted in pairs, they are shown in lively, rearing and contorted postures, as if dancing. These protective figures usually grace the recesses or exterior walls of temples, palaces, and even ordinary homes.
