Book Description
Foreword

During this last decade of the present century, the Society undertook a number of research projects of international academic interest under the guidance of eminent scholars and educationists. These projects were undertaken along five selected thrust areas for intensive research work primarily to bring forth the richness of Indian Culture in an integrated manner. One such area was 'Faith and Reason: The Indian Scene and Experi- ence. A national seminar on the subject was held on January 15. 1996 at the Vidyasagar Hall under the Chairmanship of Professor MM Chakraborty. President of the Society. The seminar was inaugurated by Hon'ble Justice Mr Chittatosh Mookherjee. Chairman, Human Rights Commission, West Bengal. Distinguished teachers of different universities and institutions presented their scholarly papers followed by very lively and interesting discussions in which the members present ac- tively participated. The main theme of the seminar ad- dressed itself to one of the basic and major observations made against Indian traditional culture by some western scholars - who could like to think that Indian Philosophy in general is based on Faith rather than on Reason. This raises the basic issue as to whether faith is necessarily opposed to reason or faith in order that it is not blind, has to be justified by reason. This has remained a perennial philosophical issue and some are of opinion that faith necessarily has a theological over- tone. But on the other hand, it may be argued that the domain of reason is rather narrow and even science. regarded as the epitome of national thinking has to depend on faith in its sojourn to truth.

The excellent papers presented in the seminar have been ably edited by Professor Amiya Kumar Mazumdar who was constantly assisted by Dr Loke Nath Chakraborty. We recall the memory of Prof. Amiya Mazumdar who is not alive to see this publication. I am happy that this anthology is now ready for publication If this anthology rich in its content and presentation inspires the readers to undertake further research in the subject, our labour will be amply rewarded.
