Mukunda began yoga practices as a teenager while at West Point Military Academy Preparatory Academy. He received shaktipat Kundalini initiation from his spiritual teacher, Swami Muktananda, in 1974. while a student of Muktananda, Mukunda was staff yoga teacher and thought at four Siddha Yoga ashrams. He trained in Classical Hatha and Raja Yoga with many senior teachers and was certified in America's first professional yoga teacher training institute.

He has been on the board of directors of several international yoga organizations, most recently as North American secretary of the World Union of Yoga. He is the Executive Director of American Yoga College, which offers professional teacher training programs. Currently he directs the Yoga Therapy center in Boston, Ma.
