PREFACE

All students of music are supposed to have a basic knowledge about scientific analysis of different musical phenomena. Rapidly growing field of music cognition and exploring psychological processes involving imaging, composing and performing music need a proper foundation. This book will provide readers with a rich understanding of the central theories in the field, allowing them to pursue their interests through more focused readings.

Writing this book was initiated by the inspiration of students, who are very much in need of a proper introductory book, in English.

When I began the process I had to appreciate the challenge of summarizing such a vast area of study, suitable for a college student of music, without too much extensive explanations. The organization of the book was influenced by my experiences of teaching the courses, the approach of which was continuously refined over time, coinciding with any evolving views on the discipline. This book begins with proper introduction and motivation for broader questions that tend to capture the imagination and draw people towards the field.
