About The Book

Shankaracharya Propounder of the Advait philosophy, the Adi Guru was perhaps the first mystic saint of India who had a national vision to bind this large tract of Aryavarta into a single cultural entity. The book narrates all his achievements in philosophical field apart from explaining the most terse metaphysical concepts in a most lucid language while weaving his life history out his works the chosen few of which have been translated into Hindi and English and included in the appendix.

Introduction

The contribution of the mystic saints in consolidating and rejuvenating the perennial Indian thought and in shaping the Indian ethos has never been fully assessed for the benefit of our awakened but not learned readership. It is with this intention the present series of books has the planned and this book is the first flower of that mystic garden.

Indubitably, Shankarachanya stands as the colossus among the Indian saints of comparatively recent origin - distinct from the Rishi-Muni tradition of yorewho moulded the indigenous thought with his brilliant expositons of the sacred texts. But his philosophical interpretations the sacred text was not only an exercise in intellectual gymnastics but it also had it ethical and sociological impact. Although his achivements have been much wide and varied, the attempt through this work has been to show their representative glimpses to our curious readers. It is for this purpose that his selected works havealso been translated in Hindi and English to help them get a 'feel' of the original. His terse philosophical interpretations of the sacred texts have been also explained in a lucid and easy to comprehend language with a liberal dose of examples from the contemporary life. It is hoped that to our 'root-finding generation' this look will be an asset.
