About The Book

A revolutionary who got transformed into a scholarly saint and poet. Aurobindo is the unique poet-saint whose life-history reflects the change in the thought-process that Indian history witnessed in its most troublesome period. Instead of opting for the glamour and ease of the Indian Civil Service, he choose these rigours of political history but later retired to Pondicherry to compose The Life Divine', 'Savitri', "The Essays on Gita' like incomparable works.

This book tries to capture all that he achieved or aspired to achieve with a deep insight into his life from childhood to his end about half a century ago. A 'must' book for every awakened Indian.

Introduction

Inclusion of Sri Aurobindo in this series might raise a few eyebrows since there is hardly anything common between him and the famous mystic saints that have already figured in this series. Nevertheless, Sri Aurobindo is a famous saintly figure in his own right. His experiments and experiences in the yoga descriptions, his contribution in preparing his countrymen to mentally accept India's independence as their ultimate dream and his creative works like the epic 'Savitri' place him on a different pedestal of the saints and social reformers that India still desiderates for.

This book represents a humble attempt to reveal the multifaceted personality of this most modern Indian mystic saint. Although most of the material for this book has been borrowed from Sri Aurobindo's own works, an attempt has been made to interpret and assess the significance of the same, not only in his time and circumstances but their impact today as well. In developing his personality, copious quotations from his poems/articles and comments have been used as also his contemporaries' opinions about him. Since he mostly wrote in English, the quotations used in here have their authenticity beyond doubt, for mostly they come from Sri Aurobindo's own writing or the material made available by the Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. It is hoped that our readers would also find it worthy of inclusions in their personal library as they found the other books of this series. Lastly, the author shares with his readers the gratitude he feels for Pradeep Mittal of "Books for All" for giving him a free hand in the writing of this book.
