About The Book

This book attempts to explore the nature and direction of the environment development debate through the writings of three women environmentalists who used scientific tools to analyze the formulation of development policies and its necessary consequence and impact upon the lives of people and future generations. The work endeavours to explore few prime areas in their writings:

• The philosophical tools used as a basic framework for their environmental narratives and situational analysis i.e. the cost- benefit analysis, ecosystem approach, deep ecology or religious spiritual or cultural argument?

• A narrative on the nature and role of government i.e. altruistic, benign or controlled by vested interests, corrupt and non- participatory.

• The nature of global interaction in environment and the prospective role of international agencies and United Nations in reaching out to the voices of ordinary people.

Preface

There is a great deal of awareness that is building up among scholars and activists to preserve our environment; and a book mentioning their contributions is the need of the hour. The present work is the result of more than five years of hard work. The very idea of undertaking this ambitious project came to my mind way back in 2010, when I joined Jawaharlal Nehru University as M. Phil research scholar. Enough has been written on environment and environmental movements, but scarcely did anyone try to assess and understand the role of women activists in the shaping of the whole trajectory of environmental movements. Thus, there are many gaps in the existing literature to understand the role of activists and scholars of environmentalism. This work is an attempt to fill this gap, though not fully. My attempt in this research has been to locate the various parameters of environmentalism, and how these parameters help or limit the conservation of our ecosystem. The objective of this work is to acquaint the teachers, practitioners and students of environmental conservation with the contributions of scholars and activists of environmentalism.

In this effort of mine, I got the support, cooperation, help. encouragement and assistance of many persons and friends. I thank them all. Thanks are also due to Mr. Saurabh Mittal of Mittal Publications who took keen interest in the work and brought it out in time. The author welcomes all kinds of suggestions, comments, feedback and criticism so as to gain further enlightenment thereby improving upon the work.
