In this Tibetan inlay Kapala, that symbolism is deepened through
the presence of the Ashtamangala, the Eight auspicious symbols, intricately
inlaid across the surface. By engraving the Ashtamangala upon a skull form, the
artisan unites two profound teachings: the inevitability of death and the
promise of liberation.
The surface is meticulously covered in mosaic-like inlay of turquoise, coral, and ivory-toned stones. Turquoise signifies protection and spiritual vitality; coral evokes life force and ritual energy.
The disciplined geometry of the inlay contrasts with the organic curvature of the skull, reinforcing the tantric principle of order emerging from dissolution. Fine metal wirework frames motifs, holding the stones in precise containment while adding rhythmic movement across the surface.
