The Buddha's head is considered auspicious
and resonates with his calm, composure, and meditative character. In this brass
sculpture, the artist has presented Buddhism and its connection with the
Ashtamangala signs in the Tibetan culture. These signs are the teaching tools
in many religions (Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism) and many cultures (Tibet,
Nepal, and China).

The forehead has six of the eight
Ashtamangala signs; the Conch (representing his melodious voice), Endless Knot
(union of wisdom and compassion), Lotus (purity of body, speech, and mind),
Parasol (protection from illness), Dharmachakra (represents Gautam Buddha and
the dharma teaching), Victory Banner (his victory over Mara or Illusion). In the
middle of the forehead is his third eye, representing the entrance leading to
the inner reality of higher conscience. The eyebrows are raised from the
forehead, balanced, and match the sleek design of the nose. The long earlobes,
a symbol that Buddha can listen to all the sufferings of this world, are
extended with a lotus design.

The bun made of the snail shells in this
artifact spirals up, and on the top is the ushnisha, which Buddha attained
after being enlightened.
