The Theosophical Society was born out of the perception of a deep need. On one level it was personal, based on the fact that each of us as individuals struggle in search of peace, contentment, security, and happiness. Throughout history, spiritual traditions across cultures have illuminated the path to fulfilling these central human needs. In Theosophy, the Ageless Wisdom, the essence of these diverse traditions is compiled and presented in a manner suitable for our time. At its core, the Theosophical Society was founded in response to the impersonal need of humanity as a whole. Theosophy was presented as an attempt to redirect two emerging trends in human thought. At a time when popular thought was becoming blinded by the wonders of a science that declared matter as the sole reality on the one hand, and by religion that stifled critical thinking in blind submission to belief on the other, there was a need for a third way. This way demonstrated that there was no science, religion, or belief higher than Truth; a way in which our hidden inner potentials for compassion, love without boundaries, and unity could be realized. While nothing would, or could happen overnight, person by person powerful seeds could be sown in the shared ground of human consciousness.
In all spiritual traditions there is an awareness that truly enlightened people have lived among us. These people whose stated purpose was to elevate humanity to new heights of understanding, have earned various names Rishis, Messiahs, World Teachers, Perfected Beings, Enlightened Beings, and Masters. Though occasionally they have visibly operated in the world, always they remain to influence those who are receptive to their promptings. This realization formed the basis for the founding of the Theosophical Society (TS), and the reason that within the TS the Masters are regarded as its Inner Founders. Although the organization was founded in New York City, it soon became evident that its growth and potential lay elsewhere.
It was only when the two Founders came to India that their efforts took wing. Within three years they discovered what was to become the TS's international headquarters in Adyar. From this place remarkable events unfolded and the movement spread around the world.
In many body-centered therapies there is an awareness of how closely the physical body is linked to the inner life of the person. Certain areas of the body hold the accumulated experiences of a lifetime, serving as repositories of memories and insights. The Adyar headquarters of the TS is similar. Every place on its grounds, has witnessed shared moments of deep reflection, inspiration, challenge, and insight with people from all walks of life. The energies of this sacred space have concentrated in temples, museums, libraries, archives, gardens, school buildings, offices, and final resting places around the campus. All of them are physical reminders of a history that is invisible to most. Just as the human body is composed of trillions of cells, the TS owes its existence to the small, mostly unseen contributions of countless others.
Over the course of its 150-year history, the TS has been the subject of numerous books exploring its profound influence on global culture. Biographies of its Founders and prominent members have been published in various parts of the world. Books and dissertations abound on the effects of the theosophical movement in such diverse fields as quantum physics, politics, poetry, art, philosophy, social activism, and of course, spirituality.
This book is unique. It is a meticulously researched account, brimming with captivating stories of individuals and events that would have remained hidden if not for Geetha Jaikumar's extensive and dedicated exploration of the TS Archives. Through its pages, Geetha invites us, in this sesquicentennial year of the Society's existence, to embark on a journey into the heart of the movement, transporting us to the sacred space of Adyar: The Masters' Home.
