The third editon of the Homeopathic Medical Repertory was designed to be a complete rewrite and major upgrade of the second edition. My attempt has always been to create a new and easy-to-use repertory for homeopaths to use in daily practice, while still remaining accessible for use at home and in the classroom. The changes made in this third edition comprise my attempts to build on that philosophy. The Homeopathic Medical Repertory contains hundreds of new remedies and thousands of new rubrics in addition to many thousands of updates and additions.
The Homeopathic Medical Repertory, third edition was updated to be a more clinical, practical and easy-to-use reference guide to the vast homeopathic materia medica. After editing the second edition, I continued to add more modern terminology, cross references and corrected any errors. The final step was to systematically survey the homeopathic literature for reliable additions. My highest priority was to find more clinical information relevant to modern homeopathic practice.
The result is the third edition of the Homeopathic Medical Repertory, which contains 74 chapters, modern terminology and diseases, as well as consistent alphabetical formatting of chapters, rubrics and sub-rubrics. Over 20,000 new rubrics, and more than 1,00,000 new additions and updates, all in a small lightweight book for convenience.
The definition of word repertory originates from the Latin word 'repertoir," which means any store or stock. (e.g. of information), that can be drawn upon. Repertorium'. in French and Latin, means a catalogue or storehouse. Repertoire means a collection or an inventory of capabilities (e.g. songs, plays, music. etc.). In homeopathy the word 'repertory' refers to books which are compiled indexes of the Homeopathic and Herbal Materia Medicas.
Referring to his repertory. J. T. Kent said, 'It has been built from all sources, and is a compilation of all the useful symptoms recorded in the fundamental works of our materia medica, as well as from the notes of our ablest practitioners."
There have been more than 110 different repertories published as part of homeopathic literature during the last 170 years. The first repertory was created by Samuel Hahnemann which he called as 'Symptom Dictionary". Later, Jahr and Boenninghausen compiled their indexes to the homeopathic materia medica.
In modern terms, the repertory represents the clinical and research database for the practice of homeopathic medicine. The general information contained in these books are derived from history, provings, clinical practice, research, physiology and toxicology.
This edition was designed to be a modern, practical and easy to use clinical guide to the vast homeopathic materia medica. To achieve these goals, a redesigned and upgraded repertory had to be compiled (including a new schema), focusing on filling in the clinical deficiencies and correcting the major flaws found in older repertories.
A schema is defined as a plan, outline or diagram. In homeopathy, a schema comprises the basic outline of headings and sub-headings used in our materia medicas and repertories. Many variations have been tried throughout the last 170 years. The most common historical schemas are represented by the hierarchical and concordance approaches while the schema used in this work is clinically focused and organized alphabetically.
