At the heart of traditional Tibetan medicine lies the myrobalan. The essence of this Himalayan vegetation has the power to heal, preserve, and reverse senescence. It is no wonder that a sprig of this wondrous plant is to be found in the hand of Lord Bhaishajyaguru, popularly known as the medicine Buddha of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. In this statue, the Lord is seen with a medicine bowl upon the upturned palm of His left hand which lies on His lap and, caught in the fingers of the right hand resting on His knee is the myrobalan.

The iconography of Lord Bhaishajyaguru is distinguished by these two elements. Within the bowl is contained a potion that taps into the inner healing prowess of whichever entity it is applied to. He is seated in the signature padmasana. Along with the stance of His neck and the way the lids shut over the eyes, it puts together the very image of profound contemplation (samadhi). Indeed it is in the deep recesses of samadhi that the Buddha had attained to the powerful state of Bhaishajyaguru.
