Book Description
Foreword

This biography is a tribute to Madhav Rao Adkar, This the composer of the world-famous Aarati 'Aarati Sai Baba', by his family and all the devotees - especially the Sai devotees. This is an attempt to unveil the life journey of an ascetic householder. It contains information about their ancestors who were all devoted to God and worshipers of God. At the same time, there is a glimpse of the way in which the next generation of Madhavrao has continued to preserve this legacy of grace and moral values.

After Yogiraj (Sabajipant), Madhavrao made the name of Adkar family in the spiritual world in all respects. By the grace of Shri Sachchidanand Sadguru Sainath Maharaj, the words flowing from the writings of devoted Madhavrao were touched by divinity. In the company of Dasganu Maharaj, his devotion to God rose to prominence and with his writing 'Aarati of Sai Baba', his name was forever associated with his Sadguru.

The Lord says, 'From me to the devotees, holiness increases, inevitably, whatever holiness is in me, is because of my devotees.' It is because of my devotees that 1 attain holiness and purity. Then the devotee who has attained such a state will create a divine work of art that gives atmananda peace to the soul to the Lord and the devotees.

It is a mere illusion to think that we are doing devotion just by doing Namasmaran-Chanting or Pooja worship. It is just a routine ritual. In this context, Sai Baba once said to Nanasaheb Chandorkar's wife, "This my mother, who runs grinding stone daily but the outcome is coarse material!' There is so much to learn from what Baba said!

The devotee who devotes his life to the slavery of God, burns the vices and the incense of ego and becomes engrossed in self-realization, is the only one who possesses the love of God. Happiness abounds in their lives. This is the secret of devotion.

Enjoying solitude in the company of Sadguru, Madhavrao was experiencing 'dialogue with God without words' Shabdevin Samvadu in the latter part of his life. The elements were absorbed in contemplation. He was doing all the deeds as a yogi, yet he was completely detached from them. By the grace of Sadguru, his body was as pure as his inner being.

In 'Aravachin Bhakta Leelamruta', book by Dasganu Maharaj, it is described in details how should be your state of mind before leaving our mortal body, so as to get 'mukti'. It says- 'No Desire shall remain in mind, with full concentration of mind remember the Lord, meditate with the truthfulness to your deity-whosoever is your deity and at the end of your meditation you will get Mukti-liberation from all the worldly bondage and matters'.

Preface

Sfigure in the minds of billions of Sai Baba devotees all over the world, through his timeless creation 'Arati Sai Baba'.

He was born at Ahmednagar in the state of Maharashtra in India on 5th September, 1877. He was a deeply pious man and though married, he was largely detached from worldly matters.

Madhavrao travelled across the country as a pilgrim until reaching Shirdi, the abode of fakir saint Sai Baba. He became a staunch devotee of Shri Sai Baba and followed him for the rest of his life during which he was abundantly blessed by the Sadguru. Sai Baba blessed Madhavrao with a son and instructed that he be named 'Rama' after the deity.

Madhavrao was a linguist and was well fluent in Marathi, Urdu, Hindi, Sanskrit and Telugu languages. There are references that he even acted in Sanskrit plays. He had a unique poetic talent and that combined with his steadfast devotion to Sai Baba culminated in the formation of the famous 'Arati Sai Baba' which was blessed by Sai himself. It is sung in all temples of Sai Baba on the daily Pooja throughout India and abroad as well. Having led a fulfilled life of piety, Madhavrao ascended to heavenly abode at Loni village in Paranda Taluka of Osmanabad district in Maharashtra on 18th November, 1955.

Since 1956 to 1992, we the Adkar family continued to reside at Barshi tehsil about 25km away from Loni until we shifted to Pune. At Pune, we came in contact with numerous Sai Baba devotees who were eager to meet our father Ramchandra and seek his blessings. There was abundance of Shri Sai Baba related gatherings at Pune throughout the year giving us ample opportunities to meet many devotees from time to time.

One day in the year 1993, our family friend Mr. Madhukar (Madhukaka) Joshi invited us for the 75th celebration of Shri Sai Baba's mahasamadhi to be held at Mumbai. The occasion was graced by the then governor of Maharashtra Dr. P. C. Alexander as the chief guest. During the celebration, the honour of Sai Baba's 'Madhyanha Arati' was given to our father Ramchandra Adkar. After the Arati, a number of devotees thronged our father and enquired about our grandfather Madhavrao. It was then that we first felt the need for a biographical book about Madhavrao Adkar.

That function inspired me to take up the project of chronicling the life of Madhavrao for the benefit of generations to come. Madhukaka was a trustee of the Shirdi Sansthan for two terms. He encouraged me from time to time to write this book and made available the old issues of 'Saileela' magazine for references.
