Book Description
About the Book
The book focuses on the two questions concerning land property relationships. Part One is a study of the movement of landlord-ism through time. The impact of land transfer on the structure of landlordism and the consequent growth of sharecrop-ping system have been carefully considered. Part Two is an enquiry into the up-per structure of the land system of Bengal, i.e. the zamindari system. In this part the author has adopted a case study method, relying on archival sources available in the Court of Wards papers, and attempted to analyse the zamindari system as a mode of surplus appropriation. In the next place, the author pieces together the findings obtained in the preceding two parts. Here he has suggested a hypothesis on the structure of colonial landlordism in the Dacca division. The work will shed a new light on the problems of the internal structure of a dependant agrarian economy at quite and advanced stage of its incorporation into the capitalist colonial system.

Preface
This work seeks to make a consistent analysis of agrarian system in eastern Bengal during the height of British colonialism. In doing this, I have not made an attempt at an encyclopaedic survey of the agrarian problems. I have rather chosen to focus my efforts on the two questions concerning landed property relationships that appear to my mind of vital importance. Part One is a study of the movement of landlordism through time. The impact of land transfer on land-lordism and the consequent growth of the sharecropping system have been carefully considered. Part Two is an enquiry into the basic framework of the land system in Bengal, i.c. the zamindari system. In this part I have adopted a case study method, relying on a large number of original files of the Court of Wards, and attempted to analyse the zamindari system as a mode of surplus appropriation. Part Three pieces together the findings obtained in the preceding two parts. Here I have suggested a hypothesis on the nature of colonial landlordism in eastern Bengal. On the whole, it is hoped that this work will shed a new light on the problems of the internal economic system of a dependent society at quite an advanced stage of its incorporation into the capitalist colonial system.
