Book Description
About the Book
Kämašästra invokes keen interest among people of all strata, all countries and makes a reflective impact on their lives. Although there is plethora of literature on the subject, most of them deal with the sexual relationships and copulation postures, relegating its genuine scientific relevance. For many, the Kamasitra is the only authoritative text on Kämaśāstra, ignoring a large volume of texts on psychology, sociology and eugenics under its wide gamut. Based on the extensive research and empirical inputs from Ayurveda practitioners, this book addresses the missing links of Kamaśāstra and the strong influence of Ayurvedic principles on its overall framework. It discusses discoveries from the multiform temple structures at Khajuraho, the Sun Temple at Konärk and Śri Chenna-Kešava Swamy Temple at Bellür among many others. These evidences endorse the theoretical views gathered from the pertinent literature. It helps readers understand Kämaśāstra concepts from different perspectives, especially the elaborations on various asanas. The book deals with core Ayurvedic themes like homeostasis, balance in physiological constituents, anatomy, digestion and metabolism, diet, lifestyles, therapeutical approach, virility, aphrodisiac and pharmacology, eugenics, surgery, materia medica, medication and medicinal plants that are presented as an extension to the Kämaśāstra theory. The volume highlights the concept of astanga Kämaśāstra dealing with characteristics of the male, female, venue of copulation, rituals to yield progeny, prosperity, protection and happiness from Kämadeva, significance of the right copulation mood and energy, food and sense consumption, and instruments. It should entice students, researchers, Ayurvedic practitioners, and others alike. Book will certainly be useful to the students and researchers, Ayurvedic colleges, practitioners, and an interested reader of Ayurveda and Kämaśāstra.

Foreword
Dr Rahul Vishwas Altekar has taken up the study to "felicitate the fusion between the ancient and the modern sciences emphasizing the outlook to learn from the past to shape the future". Let me begin with the basics. Is there really a need to learn "Kämaśāstra"? Sex is absolutely an individual natural urge and what is there to "learn"?. Sex is a proven thing known to everyone without any formal training. "Is there any teacher who teaches the animals and birds to entertain their own wives?", asks Kāmasūtra 2.1.21. It is a very primary and basic question. The answer by Vätsyāyana is not casual but has a potential treasure in it. He has attached some societal values to the natural urge. One of the values is "sex only in youth" (2.1.3). Another is "one has to follow abstinence till the completion of study" (2.1.6) and at last he concludes with, "whoever masters this śāstra, becomes the controller of his sense organs, controls one's position of the dharma, artha in the society (2.7.58). What about sex in Ayurveda! Is there really a need to juxtapose Ayurveda and Kämaśāstra? Why not let them become stand alone entities? Why do we need such interdisciplinary study when: Ayurveda has väjikaraņa as a specialized branch of Aşțänga Ayurveda, along with the other seven, viz. kāya, bala, graha, ūrdhvanga, śalya, agad and rasāyana? Ayurveda has discussed having children, safe birth. Not only that, it has discussed the "preparation" of male and female to become competent to "expect" pregnancy. It has instructed about the diet and medicines, and therapeutics.

Prologue
It GIVES me immense pleasure to write a Prologue to this book entitled Ancient Indian Eugenics, Eroticism and Sex Psychology (Theory of Kamaśāstra): An Ayurvedic Perspective written by Dr Rahul Vishwas Altekar. The subject matter of the book is unique in the Indian knowledge world. Although India is known for its ancient knowledge, we find a lot of hesitation to discuss about sex openly even today. No doubt, sex is a powerful instinct in human beings like in all beings. It is considered as one of the basic needs of man like food, sleep, water and so on. There are different opinions and different attitudes regarding sex throughout the world. Even in India, it is a debatable topic since a long time. Some consider it as one of the human goals and other treat it is an enemy of the man. According to some, copulation is a heinous act, at the same time, for others it is a procreational sacrifice. Sex was censured as lust by some and glorified as love by others. Some perform kāma-pūjā and some perform kāmadahana. In this paradoxical situation, the author has taken a bold step to deal with this delicate matter openly.
