Part 1 (Paragraphs 1-151] Junior Course
Part 2 (Paragraphs 152-294] Senior Course
Forword I am happy to introduce to the students and members of the Homœopathic fraternity the Annotated text of the Organon of Medi-cine by Dr. S.N. Ganguli, B.A. (Hons.). D.M.S. which is written on an entirely new plan. The text books of Organon, published so far, made no attempt to present this most vital book on Homœopathy in a read-able manner. Excellent commentaries by erudite scholars are available in the market. But the text remained as difficult to follow as before. In the present book a serious attempt has been made by the author to facilitate the first attempt of the beginners to approach this indis pensable work in the easiest comprehensible manner. The subject mat-ter of the text has been formulated as a question and put up in the head-ing. The answer to the question, which is also the substance of the paragraph, is given in the marginal notes side by side. The paragraph itself is divided into subparagraphs as soon as a new point is raised. This is very helpful for easy understanding. The discussions on the paragraphs are according to the acknowl-edged authorities in the field like Drs Kent and Dunham. I find that in the discussions, numerous characteristics of drugs from the Materia Medica have been mentioned which are very apt. This will help the students a great deal to get a proper perspective of reading both the Organon and the Materia Medica. This is an additional advantage. The language used in the Chapter on question and answers, is lucid and clear. The discussions on the Origin of Homœopathy is very interesting and revealing. The changes introduced in the 6th Edition haye also been furnished. It will also be very helpful to the students to go through Chapter 5 of this book where technical words, uncommon words as well as words used in a special sense have been explained, at some instances, even with examples. I recommend this book to the students of Homœopathy who will derive a thorough understanding of the subject from its careful perusal. I finally thank the author for his sincere attempt in the service of the spread of the Homœopathic knowledge which is so dear to the heart of us all. Preface By the grace of the Almighty the 4th Edition of the Annotated Text of Hahnemann's Organon of Medicine appears as a combined edition of Parts 1 and 2 after a long lapse of eleven years due to the unpredictable vicissitudes of human relations. I have undertaken to publish the book myself from the Fourth Edition onward in combined form of Parts I and 2. Demand for the book is evident from the persistent references made to me from time to time. This compact edition makes available to the stu-dents and the practitioners the full text of Hahnemann's Organon of Medicine as well as an analysis of the primary and the secondary symp toms of the three basic miasms Psora, Syphilis and Sycoxis along with the drugs specially suited to these miasms as advocated by established authorities in the field. Homœopathic treatment is based on the fixed principle of similars. To be successful in Homœopathic practice one must know how to exam-ine a patient (case taking) and the value of symptoms. Both of these prob-lems have been exhaustively dealt with in Q9 and Q11. The most diffi-cult task of a physician is to find out the symptoms that specially mark and distinguish the case of the disease (§ 104), How to find out the most important mental general symptoms like the loves, propensities, desires and aversions of the patient as also the physical general symptoms like the relation to heat and cold, rest and motion, day and night, seasons like winter, rain, summer and stormy weather, damp wet weather and the clear fine weather etc., is the desideratum. "There are in every remedy symptoms of sensation, circumstance, con-stitution or modality which are peculiar both to disease and remedies" (Nash p.102), when totality of the peculiar symptoms of a patient is matched with the characteristics of the drug on the principle of similar, success is assured. If the rules prescribed by the exceptional genius, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann are accurately followed, the Homœopathic treatment will be so successful that it will border on the miraculous. If they are not followed due to laziness on our part, the failures are ours and not of the system. Let us, therefore, strive to improve our performance in an in-formed way by knowing the Organon and applying it by following the experience of the authorities that have gone before us. May God crown our sincere efforts with success!
