Book Description
Introduction
The first reaction of many who hear of this book will be to ask: Does Arab painting really exist? And it it does, what is it like? Even when the prospective reader has the book with all its color plates before him, and can no longer be entirely incredulous, he may still be puzzled about the exact nature of "Arab painting." Indeed, both words of the title require some explanation, What is meant by "Arab"? The term has had a long history since it first appeared in an inscription of 853 n.c. in which the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III spoke of one rebellious Gindibu the Arihi whom he had defeated in a campaign. Since then the word has had increasingly wide usage, but with connotations that have changed from time to time so that it has become a rather ambiguous term. It referred, for instance (and still does to some extent), to the Bedouin nomad in the desert in contrast to the sedentary population; or to the inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula and some of its marginal areas; or again, in modern times, to a group of nations in Southwest Asia and North Africa whose tongue is Arabic. None of these meanings apply here. The word "Arab" will be used in this book (as in other historical accounts) rather in its wider meaning. to refer to the universal civilization of that medieval empire that had its origin in a new Arab religion-Islam-which first became a military and political force in Arabia. and was to a large extent held together by the medium of Arabic, the language of its divine worship, administration, scholarship, and poetry. In spite of these Arab contributions in its origin, the civilization of this huge realm was soon extensively developed by the intellectual power and artistic skill of men of other constituent ethnic stocks-Persians, Egyptians, Berbers, Turks-most of them Muslim, but also of other faiths. The vital point is, however, not the ethnic connection, as we might think today, but that there existed a strong feeling among the Muslims of the Middle Ages, whatever their origin, a definite consciousness of belonging to a divinely ordained "Arab" civilization. This is perhaps most poignantly expressed by the great scientist al-Birûni (973-1048) who came from a marginal region, Khwarizm (in the present Soviet autonomous Karakalpak Republic), and who said: "Our religion and our empire are Arab and twins, the one protected by the power of God, the other by the hand of Heaven.
