Ravi Paranjape recognized as a super painter, portrait artist, great architecture Illustrator, occupies a preeminent place in the world of visual art. Born in 1935 in Belgaum, Karnataka, Paranjape began his journey in art at Chitra Mandir under late professor K. B. Kulkarni. He moved to the then Bombay State to complete his government diploma in drawing and painting. This set a firm foundation for his brilliant professional career in Mumbai and then in Pune as a representational painter.
Ravi's art is based on a firm foundation of precise drawing. All his works exhibit his mastery over drawing, knowledge of anatomy, depiction of character and action, attention to detail, all bound together in lyrical composition.
The 'composition in his artwork deserves to be studied by itself. There may be numerous components in his artworks, but they are invariably interwoven harmoniously. Moreover, the colour schemes in his artworks are striking and refreshing.
Another of Ravi Paranjape's pioneering contributions to the art world is 'architectural rendering. He remains the only practitioner of this art form. In his heyday. Ravi created architectural renderings for a number of prominent architects in Mumbai.
His realistic illustrations in the Illustrated Weekly Annual, for Indrajal Comics publications such as Ramacharit Manas, Mahabharata, Purushottam Dev and Padmavati have their own distinctive style, characterised by precise and delicate line work and are a lesson in comic book illustration.
Not only is his artwork illuminated by his unique style, it is also distinctly 'Indian. His study of Indian miniatures has enabled him to develop his own ornamental style.
Ravi Paranjape achieved mastery over diverse media including graphite pencil, colour pencil, pastels, watercolours, acrylics, oil paints... and handled all these media to create beautiful art that has his inimitable stamp.
Among his trophies are the Dayawati Modi Award for art, culture and education; CAG Hall of Fame- lifetime achievement award and Kusumagraj Pratishtan's Godavari Gaurav Puraskar.
Ravi was also a prolific writer. Besides contributing to various newspapers, he has written a number of books in Marathi and English. The absorbing Shikhare Ranga Reshanchi lists his observations in Marathi on the styles and work of artists who introduced him to real modern art. His views on cultural nationalism come forth in the acclaimed Neel-Dhavala Dhwajakhali which got him the Abhijaat Prize. His autobiography The Brush Mileage won him the Bhairu Ratan Damani Literary Award. The World Of My Illustrations volume one and two, The World Of My Colour Illustrations and When I Sing Through Colour elaborate on the intricacies of his talent, skills and desires.
His art is ornamental, unique and astonishingly beautiful and the sheer scope and volume of his oeuvre is truly staggering. If there is one aspect of Ravi Paranjape's work that stands out, it is the visual beauty that resides naturally in his art.
