Book Description
About the Book:

This book presents a new and more comprehensive definition of the term 'beauty' in the light of the philosophical theory of individuation. According to this theory, beauty is a mark of success of an individuation of the feeling of affinity between the Sublime and the Particular. This affinity is realized in the practical activity of making something - i.e., in the artistic activity.

An attempt has been made by the authoress to interpret the major Indian Arts, viz., architecture and sculpture, painting, music and dance and literature on the basis of the concept of beauty developed by her. The approach is philosophical and not technical or historical.

About the Author:

Dr. (Mrs.) Shyamala Gupta, Ph.D. of Bombay University, formerly lecturer in philosophy in Ramnarain Ruia College, Bombay, is at present a senior lecturer in Kamala Nehru College (University of Delhi), New Delhi. Her field of specializing being Aesthetics, she worked on this subject as a research fellow in Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Simla, during 1966-67. She proposes to publish in soon her book "Aesthetics and the Sublime" which presents an entirely new approach to the problem of art and beauty.
