Book Description
About the Book
The study of mathematical commentaries remains a relatively under-explored area within the broader scholarship on the history of Indian mathematics. Yet, these commentaries are crucial for understanding the Indian tradition's philosophy of science, approach to proofs, and mathematical methods. Bhaskara's renowned text Lilavati and its many commentaries form a key part of this tradition. Among them, Gaņeśa Daivajña's Buddhivilāsini and Šańkara Väriyar's Kriyākramakari are fairly well known, largely due to high-quality editions published by eminent twentieth-century scholars. Pandit Sudhäkara Dvivedi, an eminent historian of Indian mathematics and astronomy, praised Munīśvara's Nisṛştārthadūti as uttamottama (the finest among the excellent commentaries on the Līlāvati) in his Ganakatarangiņi. Yet, nearly a century later, this work remained unpublished and largely overlooked, depriving scholars access to its rich and insightful contributions. This volume seeks to correct this oversight through a critically prepared edition of the Nisṛṣṭārthadūti, based on three significant manuscripts. We hope it will prove to be caturaprītipradā (pleasing to the discerning) and also help in generating further interest in the history of Indian mathematics.
