Introduction
This dissertation is the first attempt of its kind to study the growth and development of Bhind town from the point of view of a geographer, Bhind, since times immemorial, has exercised its influence over a wider area and has passed through many phases of trials and tribulations in the course of many centuries and is now on its way to expansion, development and change. Hence this study is not only timely but is also of vital significance for a happier life in this town. Nevertheless, when we descend from the theoretical perspective to the practical problems of day to day life we come across with several difficulties with regard to communication, extreme congestion in the heart of the town and its resultant growth in the surrounding areas in a haphazard way, sometimes at the cost of farm land and agricultural fields. In order to solve the problem of such an un-balanced and confused growth, it appears absolutely necessary to steer the course of the plans along certain well defined channels, with the skill and assistance of not only engineers and architects but also of geographers, since in many cases it is the geography of the site that determines the urban landscape which the urban geographer in the field can well appreciate. The present study deals with the urban morphology of Bhind town taking into consideration the past as well as the present structures and functions of the town. This study is not a detailed one as one might expect but it brings to the surface many unanswered problems, which urbanization has brought in its wake a trail of evils. It is, however, hoped that the analysis of the past and present layouts of the town and the factors behind them will be a pointer toward the development potentials of the town. Although change has drained much of the colour from the living tissue, yet the planned development will certainly help us to proceed further towards better living in future. Even some guide-lines might be suggested whereby the errors of the past could be eliminated by following the well known dictum "Adopt where you must and change where you can".
