The book Bhubaneswar: the Capital of Odisha seeks to highlight various debates behind the choice of Bhubaneswar as the capital site, including the history of capital construction by compiling administrative records and correspondences news items and Legislative Assembly proceedings. The board of editors has prepared an introduction to the source materials and archival documents which form the bulk of the book. The appendices contain the master plan prepared by Dr. H Koenigsberger, an important extract on Bhubaneswar from the Puri district Gazetteer, 1977 an architect's perspective on capital planning and construction, maps and photographs etc.
I express our deep sense of gratitude to Dr. Mahesh Prasad Dash, Dr. Atul Chandra Pradhan, Sri Raj Kishore Mishra, Dr. Sakuntala Baliarsingh for rendering immense assistance in bringing out such a valuable and useful edition, based on archival documents, preserved in the Odisha State Archives and from other sources.
Though there was a plan for such a publication, the idea of implementing it within such a shorttime gave rise to some apprehension, However with the active support of Dr. Aurobinda Kumar Padhi, I.A.S., Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Deptt. of Tourism & Culture and Sri Susil Kumar Das, O.A.S (SAG), Director, Culture, this onerous task has been accomplished as per the schedule. I am grateful to them for their cooperation. I express my deep sense of gratitude to Dr. Bibekananda Das, former Superintendent & Dr. Sk. Soleman Ali, Curator, Odisha State Archives for their help in making available all relevant documents to the Board of Editors.
