The spread of Buddhist religion brought spiritual unity to most of Asia and it is more so to South Asia. Extending far beyond its origins in India Buddhism also exerted an artistic influence which was effective in diverse cultures, where it gave rise to parallel creations in arcei, lecture and figural imagery. In some cases new styles and schools were created by artists in the service of the Buddhist faith. From this point of view the study of Buddhism in Ceylon is fascinating and alluring. The immense wealth of Buddhist art of Ceylon is pregnant with complex symbol-ism. A critical reapprosal is warranted for understanding the Buddhist religion, and philosophy of Ceylon. The author elucidates in this book with percipience and authenticity the various aspects of Buddhism in Ceylon. The author's treatment of the Buddhist sects is superb. The masterly treatment of the author of the subjects covering architecture, sculpture and pe enters and diversification of Buddhist monuments of Ceylon distinctly reflects his immaculate scholarship.
This splended book remains an authoritative work on Buddhism in South Asia with special reference to Ceylon. No student of Buddhist religion philosophy, art and architecture can afford to miss this valuable work.
